Trinidad and Tobago Takes a Seat on the UN Security Council

In a significant advancement for international diplomacy, Trinidad and Tobago has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Minister of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Sean Sobers expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the nation, acknowledging the confidence bestowed upon Trinidad and Tobago by the UN membership. This election is not just a diplomatic victory but also a testament to Trinidad and Tobago’s long-standing commitment to the rule of law and championing human rights.

Sobers emphasized the country’s readiness to shoulder the responsibilities that come with this role, highlighting the government’s intent to focus on critical issues such as the empowerment of women and children in peace processes and the urgent fight against illicit arms trafficking. He reiterated that Trinidad and Tobago is prepared to engage constructively, fostering dialogue among nations amidst complex global challenges.

Reflecting on their previous term on the Security Council from 1985 to 1986, Sobers reiterated the importance of being a principled and reliable partner in discussions aimed at achieving broader peace and security.
