Jowelle Reveals Transition Surgery Was Done In Trinidad With Aunt’s Support

Jowelle has opened up about her transition from male to female, revealing that the surgery forming a major part of that journey was performed right here in Trinidad, at the same nursing home where she says she was born.

Sharing details of a deeply personal chapter of her life, Jowelle explained that the process was not something that happened overnight. According to her account, it involved approximately two years of psychiatric care, hormonal treatment and eventually surgery.

But one person appears prominently throughout her recollection: her aunt, Margaret Whitehead.
Jowelle said Whitehead owned Victoria Nursing Home and had been particularly close to her since childhood. Her aunt had no children of her own, she recalled, and Jowelle regarded herself as the closest child to her.
She also said her aunt knew from childhood that she was “different”.

When Jowelle later returned to Trinidad during her transition, she recalled an encounter with her aunt that immediately showed how she would be received.
“You look just like me. You’re gorgeous,” Jowelle remembered her telling her.

Her aunt’s response did not end with words of acceptance.
According to Jowelle, Whitehead became actively involved in helping her through the medical process.
Jowelle said that before she could undergo the operation, she was required to receive psychiatric treatment. Her aunt helped connect her with a psychiatrist who, according to Jowelle, worked for the Government and also practised at Victoria Nursing Home.

At the same time, Jowelle said she was receiving hormonal treatment from a gynaecologist.
That process continued for approximately two years.
Jowelle recalled that her parents largely stayed out of that part of her journey, while her aunt took on the responsibility of guiding her through it.

“She wanted me to be happy,” Jowelle said.
Eventually, the focus shifted from treatment to surgery.
Jowelle recalled her aunt seeking the necessary medical clearance and putting together the professionals needed for the operation, including a urologist and anaesthesia support.
And despite the specialised nature of the procedure, Jowelle says she did not have to leave Trinidad to undergo it.

She recalled continuing to work until the Saturday on which the operation was scheduled.
At around 2 pm that day, Jowelle said her mother took her to Victoria Nursing Home.
It was there that Jowelle says she underwent the operation associated with her transition from male to female.

“I had my operation done right here in Trinidad,” she recalled.

That revelation creates a striking full-circle element in her story.

Jowelle says Victoria Nursing Home was the place where she was born. Years later, it would also become the place where she underwent one of the most significant procedures of her transition.
Her recollection provides a rare personal account of not only transitioning in Trinidad, but of the medical process she says preceded the surgery and the family support that helped her get there.

For Jowelle, however, the story is also about an aunt who recognised her differences from childhood and, when the time came, chose to help her pursue the life she wanted.

From psychiatric care and hormonal treatment to the eventual operation, Jowelle credits her aunt with helping to put the pieces together.

And when the day of the surgery finally arrived, one of the defining moments of Jowelle’s transition did not take place abroad.

It happened at home, in Trinidad.
