In Georgetown, Guyana, the tragic recovery of 29-year-old Special Constable Andri “Bobby” Francis and his pregnant fiancée, Lyodisa Waldron, from the Atlantic surf has brought to light the circumstances surrounding their fatal trip to Unity Beach. This journey was prompted by a last-minute route change due to severe flooding in the region.
Emelda Haynes, Francis’s mother, recounted her final conversations with her son just hours before the incident. Initially, Francis had planned to attend a church service with his eldest brother along the Soesdyke-Linden Highway. However, after receiving a warning about flooded sections of the highway, they decided to change their plans and head to Unity Beach instead.
As her son prepared to leave, Haynes expressed her concerns about the dangers of the Atlantic coastline. Despite her worries, Francis reassured her of his swimming abilities, stating, “Mommy, I can take care of myself. I can swim good, you know.” Haynes recalled pleading with him to be careful, but his confidence in his swimming skills left her with a sense of unease.
Haynes described her son as a loving and industrious individual who played a significant role in supporting their household. She shared a memory of him working tirelessly during a heavy downpour to complete a project for her yard without complaint. The tragedy has deeply affected the family, as Francis and Waldron were preparing for the arrival of their first child, due in August.
The joint search and recovery operations conducted by the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard and the Guyana Police Force concluded with the retrieval of both bodies along the Unity foreshore. Post-mortem examinations are expected to take place within the week.
