Nepal Government Forms Team to Negotiate with Loan Shark Victims

The government has formed a talks team to hold negotiations for solving the problems of people affected by loan sharks. The meeting of the Council of Ministers held on July 16 made the decision, according to government spokesperson Sasmit Pokharel.

The team is headed by Pushkar Sapkota, secretary of the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. It includes joint secretaries from the Finance Ministry, Home Ministry, and Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration.

The move comes amid growing concerns over exploitative lending practices that have trapped many in debt cycles. The talks aim to find a sustainable solution for victims.

Additionally, the cabinet approved the Nepal Rastra Bank to mint coins of Rs 1 and 2 with new designs. It also accepted a grant assistance of USD 1.81 million from the South Korean government and endorsed provisions related to the management of employees on service contract.
