Passengers flying Malaysia Airlines from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam or Paris are being advised to travel without checked luggage due to strong headwinds and longer flight paths since the airline rerouted around Ukrainian airspace after the MH17 tragedy. The airline says that even with full fuel tanks, heavily loaded aircraft cannot complete the journey under these conditions.
Only one carry-on bag weighing up to 7 kilograms is allowed in economy class, and up to 14 kilograms in business and first class. Any additional baggage will be delayed and sent on a later flight.
The restriction applies until the end of January 2016, when Malaysia Airlines will discontinue its Amsterdam and Paris routes entirely, leaving London as its only European destination. The airline has been struggling financially following the MH17 and MH370 disasters and is focusing on regional flights in Southeast Asia.
Passengers traveling to London are unaffected, as that route uses an Airbus A380 which Malaysia Airlines states can handle the extreme conditions.
