The Ministry of Public Works announced on June 24, 2026, that a collision protection system has been successfully installed at the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge. This installation comes after the bridge has seen 4,323 vessels pass safely beneath it since its opening, highlighting the Demerara River’s role as an active navigation corridor.
The ministry emphasized the importance of the collision protection system in safeguarding the bridge while facilitating safe and orderly marine traffic. The work was completed on June 18, 2026, by the contractor, CRCCI-CRCCCL-CRBG Joint Venture.
The collision protection system has been installed around the main tower pile caps within the Demerara River. Its primary purpose is to protect the bridge’s critical substructure from accidental vessel impacts by absorbing and reducing collision forces before they reach the main tower pile caps and other supporting elements. This installation is part of the bridge’s permanent safety and protection works.
According to the Ministry of Public Works, the collision protection system enhances the resilience of the bridge, supports safer navigation near the main span, and contributes to the long-term operation of this significant national infrastructure asset. The ministry continues to prioritize safety measures to ensure the effective functioning of the bridge and the safety of marine traffic in the area.
