Gary Aboud Calls Out Illegal Construction Threat in Trinidad’s Savannah

Prominent environmental activist Gary Aboud has raised a formidable public alarm over what he describes as illegal construction activities in Trinidad’s iconic Savannah. Aboud passionately argues that ongoing roadwork in the area blatantly violates existing laws, risking significant environmental degradation and the compromising of public spaces.

According to Aboud, the Savannah is protected by a deed of covenant that explicitly prohibits any form of paving. He insists that the current developments not only ignore this covenant but also misuse public funds and resources. “This is not yours to destroy,” Aboud asserts, questioning the decision to bring “a million truckloads of crush to make road” and the potential for cars to inundate the cherished green space.

Aboud’s concerns extend to the environmental impacts of such unauthorized urban interventions. By projecting the construction of pathways for “10,000 cars,” he vividly underscores the potential for lasting damage to the ecosystem. The activist implores authorities to respect local laws designed to safeguard public amenities and natural resources.

The Savannah, long regarded as a vital communal asset, now stands at the center of a broader debate about the relationship between development and environmental preservation. Aboud’s statements have catalyzed public discourse, emphasizing the crucial necessity for responsible stewardship of Trinidad’s environmental heritage.
