Opposition Chief Whip Tabitha Sarabo-Halley has publicly defended the opposition’s nomination of Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) Leader Amanza Walton-Desir to key parliamentary select committees. This statement comes amid a legislative dispute in the 13th Parliament of Guyana. Sarabo-Halley took to social media to counter claims from House leadership that the nomination violated parliamentary protocol, accusing government officials of misrepresenting the Standing Orders to justify a political exclusion.

The controversy follows a ruling by Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir, who stated that Walton-Desir was ineligible for any of the 15 main parliamentary committees due to her party’s failure to secure the necessary proportional votes for automatic seat allocation. In response, Sarabo-Halley argued that the eligibility of individual lawmakers should not be conflated with the raw mathematics of seat allocation.

She emphasized that the Standing Orders regarding committee membership are clear, asserting that any member of the Assembly, regardless of their electoral status, is eligible for committee membership.
