Question: I am planning a trip for Christmas; however, my 12-year-old’s visa has expired. My spouse and I were recently granted visas. Would the same interview process apply?
Answer: Consular Officers are now required to interview all nonimmigrant visa applicants regardless of age, except for adults whose B1/B2 (tourist) visas are either still valid or have expired less than 12 months ago.
All non-immigrant visa applications begin with online completion of the DS-160, available at https://ais.usvisa-info.com . Use this link only. Avoid using internet searches, for example, “how to get a U.S. visa.” Vendor websites frequently advertise using images associated with the United States such as the U.S. flag or the Statue of liberty. Vendor websites request personal data and credit card information; however, any claims of expedited processing and guaranteed issuance of U.S. visas or travel permits are false. Visa appointments and expedite requests can only be made through the official U.S. Department of State visa appointment service website at https://ais.usvisa-info.com .
Begin the visa application process at least three months prior to your proposed travel date. Answer all the questions from the point of view of the child, not the parent. For example, the “occupation” might be “student” or “none.”
The biographic information must be entered exactly as it appears on the child’s passport. Print the confirmation page (also referred to as the barcode page) immediately after submitting the form online as this will be required in hard copy on the day of the interview. After completing the DS-160 form, register for an interview by creating an account on the Information and Appointment website: https://ais.usvisa-info.com
You do not need to use an “agent” or facilitator to complete the online application. However, if you choose to do so, please review the entire application before it is submitted. Ultimately you are responsible for the information on the minor’s application.
One parent or legal guardian must accompany the minor visa applicant (under age 18) on the day of the interview.
The documents required on the day of the interview are:
1. The DS-160 visa application confirmation form.
2. The child’s valid passport and any older passport with a previous visa.
3. One passport-size photo with a white background, no more than six months old. The photograph must show the child facing front, without spectacles, with a solid white background.
4. The updated polymer version of the child’s birth certificate.
Parents should provide their passports with valid visas, if possible, along with any other information related to the proposed trip.
The Quiet Monday accommodation is available for applicants who are neurodiverse, elderly, those with mobility challenges or requiring wheelchair access. Family members who wish to accompany an applicant or access the Quiet Monday option should submit the request at least three working days before the regular appointment time.
Visit the U.S. Embassy website www.tt.usembassy.gov/visas – select the Consular Navigator to submit case-specific inquiries and Quiet Monday accommodations.
