In a landmark judgment, a jury has found veteran entertainer Bill Cosby responsible for sexually assaulting Donna Motsinger, a restaurant server in 1972. This verdict comes as the result of a civil trial, which awarded Motsinger a total of $59.25 million in damages. This substantial sum includes $19.25 million in compensatory damages and $40 million in punitive damages. The trial is a significant legal victory for Cosby’s accusers, despite his consistent denials and intent to appeal the ruling.
This case was made possible by recent legislative changes in California, which temporarily lifted the statute of limitations, allowing survivors of older sexual assault cases to seek justice. Cosby’s legal history remains complex, with an original conviction in 2018 for the assault of Andrea Constand, which was later vacated by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on procedural grounds in 2021.
Despite the 2021 reversal, more than 60 women have come forward over several decades with similar accounts of drugging and assault. This latest verdict represents one of the largest financial penalties ever levied against the entertainer, reflecting both the personal toll on the victim and a desire to penalize Cosby’s conduct.
