The United States has escalated its sanctions against Venezuela by seizing two oil tankers operating in the vicinity of the South American country. US officials claim these vessels were transporting Venezuelan oil, thus violating the existing U.S. sanctions. The seizures took place in international waters, with a third tanker linked to Venezuelan oil exports now being pursued by the U.S. Coast Guard. These activities are part of a wider move to disrupt what U.S. authorities believe is a sanctions-evasion network, involving the use of false flags and tampered tracking systems. Venezuela’s government has denounced the seizures as illegal, stating they infringe upon international law. In response, Venezuela plans to take the issue to the United Nations.
