In an urgent reminder from the Department of Natural Resources and Forestry, operators of sawmills and furniture shops across Trinidad and Tobago are being strongly urged to comply with legal licensing requirements— or risk severe consequences. The authorities have reiterated that all operations must align with the Sawmills Act and its amendments, which dictate that valid licences are mandatory for legality.
According to the Department, any sawmill lacking the proper licence faces a fine reaching up to $100,000 and the possibility of imprisonment for up to five years. Additionally, a continuous daily penalty applies for ongoing breaches. Furniture shop operators are similarly bound by the law, needing a separate permit priced at $500 to function legally. Failing to secure this permit could result in fines equivalent to those faced by unlicensed sawmills and a potential one-year jail term.
Importantly, licenses are not a mere formality; they must be visibly displayed for public scrutiny and are due for renewal every January. Compliance also extends to maintaining precise records for inspection by Forestry officials, underlining the government’s commitment to upholding environmental and operational standards effectively.
The Department’s communications underscore the gravity of these legal requirements and actively urge operators to regularize their businesses. By ensuring full compliance, they can avoid facing these harsh penalties while contributing to a regulated and sustainable industry in the region.
