With the exit of several board members from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), student leaders are calling for greater accountability within the organization. The recent resignations have amplified fears regarding the governance and operational effectiveness of NSFAS, a critical entity for funding students across South Africa. Notably, student representatives highlight that such instability could prevent timely financial aid distribution, directly affecting students’ educational journeys.
Kahakisho Mamabulus, former NSFAS spokesperson, pointed to long-existing governance deficiencies as the root of the challenges currently facing the board. He emphasized that a robust and stable leadership team is essential for resolving the persistent issues impacting students and their funding.
