State of Emergency Declared in Trinidad and Tobago Amid Rising Gang Violence

Trinidad and Tobago’s government proclaimed a State of Emergency early Tuesday due to an increase in gang-related violence, including mass shootings and threats of potential retaliatory killings. The president’s signature enables the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and Defence Force to conduct operations based on intelligence to neutralize criminal threats. Despite successful efforts to reduce crime rates and dismantle several organized gangs during a previous State of Public Emergency, recent intelligence indicates an alarming rise in gang activity. The government has begun strategic operations and will continue until public safety is reestablished. These measures are part of a broader plan to ensure long-term peace and security.
