South Africa’s Surge in Migrant Deportations Raises Concerns

South Africa is ramping up efforts to deport undocumented foreign nationals. Between 47,000 and 50,000 migrants have been processed at a facility near the Zimbabwe border. This operation, managed by the Department of Home Affairs, includes the use of biometric technology to verify deportees’ identities and criminal records. The effort comes amidst closing of the Durban Repatriation Centre and rising tensions around immigration policies. The initiative has sparked widespread public discourse, emphasizing the broader immigration issue in the region.
