Opposition Criticizes Crime Management Amid State of Emergency in Trinidad and Tobago

In a passionate appeal during a recent press conference, opposition leaders, including Christian Birwood, voiced profound concerns over the escalating crime rates in Trinidad and Tobago. Birwood, the Member of Parliament for Laventille East/Morvant, emphasized the community’s anguish following a tragic incident that took the life of Gelena Armstrong and three others on the Lady Young Road. He called for unity and resilience among the citizens, urging them to support each other during trying times.

Birwood highlighted the need for accountability within law enforcement, acknowledging the dedication of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service yet stressing the importance of effective crime prevention strategies. He commended local police efforts during a recent town meeting in Morvant, where officers listened and responded to community concerns. “We must give them the necessary resources to do what they must do efficiently and effectively,” Birwood stated, pointing out the importance of not letting recognition replace accountability.

The state of emergency, which was initially intended as a temporary measure, came under fire from Birwood and his colleagues. They argued that despite increased security measures, including the proclamation of an SOE, citizens have seen little improvement in their safety and are still living in fear. The opposition questions the continuous use of the state of emergency, suggesting it is becoming normalized instead of focusing on more sustainable governance strategies.

With a focus on addressing the root causes of crime, Birwood called attention to the socioeconomic factors, such as youth unemployment, which he believes contributes significantly to the issue. He underscored that nearly 48% of Laventille East/Morvant constituents faced resource challenges, highlighting a need for targeted social programs to uplift the community and prevent crime from its roots.

Critics of the government’s current approach, including Birwood, argue that crime in Trinidad and Tobago should be tackled with comprehensive solutions that blend law enforcement with social initiatives. This sentiment resonates with many citizens who are seeking a balance between security measures and community-based programs to restore peace and safety effectively.
