TTPS Reassures Public Amid PDO Revocation and Phased Releases, Emphasizing Continued Law Enforcement and Safety Measures

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service released a statement on September 12 2026 to address growing public concern over the revocation of Preventive Detention Orders (PDOs) and the phased release of those previously detained. The service confirmed that it has made the necessary operational preparations to manage the transition and keep public safety a priority.

Police units across intelligence, investigative, and operational divisions remain coordinated, with a policing posture guided by evidence and the law. Officers will maintain visibility and conduct targeted operations in areas where assessments indicate a need, while continuing efforts to disrupt illegal firearms, gang activity and other serious criminal threats.

The statement clarified that revoking a PDO or releasing an individual does not itself provide a basis for police action against that person. If the individual remains the subject of an active investigation, the police will continue to gather evidence and pursue the case to its proper conclusion, whether during the state of emergency or after it is lifted. All further actions will be evidence‑based and strictly lawful.

Deputy Commissioner Suzette Martin urged the public to stay calm, remain vigilant, and report any criminal activity or immediate threat through official police channels. The police service reiterated its commitment to safety and security, noting that while emergency powers may change, its responsibility to protect the public does not.
