Opposition Criticizes Government’s State of Emergency as Ineffective Tool Against Crime

In a recent press conference, opposition leaders in Trinidad and Tobago voiced strong criticism towards the government’s current state of emergency, arguing that it has failed to curtail the country’s rising crime rates. They called for an evaluation of current systems, suggesting that the necessary legal frameworks to handle crime are already in place. The Anti-Gang Act and other existing laws, they insist, could address these issues without the need for continuous emergency status.

They highlighted alarming figures of unemployment, particularly among youth, as underlying problems that require attention beyond emergency measures. “Crime in Trinidad and Tobago is not driven by a single factor,” an opposition leader noted, advocating for a more holistic approach to crime prevention.
