Officer Awarded $160k for Wrongful Arrest

Anand Dass, a police officer, was wrongfully arrested and unjustly held captive for four days in June 2021, according to a ruling by High Court Judge Joan Charles. The State has been ordered to pay $160,000 in damages along with interest and legal costs. The lawsuit was filed against the Office of the Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago, who represents the State in civil matters. Despite identifying himself as a police officer on duty, Dass was detained and held at multiple stations during a surveillance operation. The officer responsible for the arrest later confessed that he didn’t believe Dass had committed any wrongdoing. Judge Charles concluded that Dass’s identity could have been easily confirmed, and police should justify any continued detention of a person. This ruling follows a previous case where Dass was awarded nearly $100,000 after being unlawfully detained during a 2017 investigation.
