French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly addressed a social media post by United States President Donald Trump that depicted the French archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon as American territory. The image, which was generated using artificial intelligence, showed the United States flag covering several nations and territories, including the French islands located off the Atlantic coast of Canada.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday during a two-day visit to Saint-Pierre, where he held discussions with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Macron dismissed the depiction. He stated that it is obvious the archipelago remains French territory and noted that he would not address the matter repeatedly simply because some individuals express unusual ideas.
The incident follows a period of diplomatic tension between the two nations. In July, the French mission to the United Nations criticized the United States for its vote regarding the mandate of UN human rights chief Volker Turk. Following that criticism, the United States delayed the approval of Aurelien Lechevallier, an ally of Macron, as the new French ambassador to the United States.
Since returning to office in 2025, President Trump has made several statements regarding international territories, including renewed interest in Greenland and suggestions regarding the political status of Canada. Additionally, the United States, Denmark, and Greenland recently announced an agreement that President Trump stated would provide Washington with permanent control over the security of the Arctic territory.
