A late night swim at Chaguaramas Bay ended in gunfire early Monday morning, leaving 25 year old Darrion Patterson dead and a 17 year old worker fighting for his life, according to the Ian Alleyne Show. The teenager remains in critical condition at hospital under police guard, while his girlfriend is in custody at the Carenage Police Station.
The family of the deceased is publicly disputing the police version of events. According to statements made on the Ian Alleyne Show, Patterson left his garage in St Joseph with the 17 year old worker and the worker’s girlfriend and drove to the vicinity near the aerospace museum, where they often went to bathe. The family says both young men had no criminal records.
The 17 year old was shot multiple times, including in the back, according to his family. He had been learning a trade and was set to return to school. His mother had been happy that he was learning a trade, the family said.
Police allege the trio was breaking and entering the premises when officers confronted them, and that the officers were attacked with knives, prompting the shooting. The circumstances remain under investigation.
Wendell Eversley, identified as the godfather of the deceased, spoke on the show. The father of the 25 year old has not yet been able to see his son’s body. The family said they will share more details on Tuesday. The Ian Alleyne Show is expected to provide further updates.
