Guyana: WPA Calls for Nationwide Protest Against Unlimited Benefits for Former Presidents

The Working People’s Alliance (WPA) is calling on citizens of Guyana to participate in a nationwide protest on Monday, July 6, 2026, in response to the government’s proposed enactment of a law that would grant former presidents unlimited benefits. WPA executive member Kidackie Amsterdam has urged various groups, including trade unions, religious organizations, community groups, youth bodies, and private sector representatives, to join the peaceful demonstration starting at 10:00 a.m. at Church of God Road in Buxton. Supporters in other regions are encouraged to hold similar peaceful protests in their communities.

Amsterdam has estimated that if the benefits are uncapped, the three former presidents—Samuel Hinds, Bharrat Jagdeo, and Donald Ramotar—could incur an additional cost of GY$100 million to GY$200 million annually, while the average old-age pensioner receives GY$46,000 monthly. Former President David Granger is currently receiving medical treatment in Cuba.

Joining Amsterdam on a recent program, former PNCR executive member Annette Ferguson expressed her support for the protest, citing the financial struggles faced by many Guyanese due to rising living costs and limited access to healthcare and education. Ferguson criticized the proposed bill, stating it imposes an unreasonable financial burden on the populace.

The proposed Former Presidents (Benefits and other facilities) Act 2026 aims to repeal the existing 2015 law that limited benefits for former presidents. If passed, the new law would allow former presidents to receive virtually unlimited benefits, including tax exemptions, regardless of their business engagements or criminal convictions.

Under the current law, benefits for former presidents are capped, including monthly payments for utilities and limited medical reimbursements. The WPA argues that the proposed legislation would significantly increase the financial obligations on taxpayers and divert funds from essential public services such as education, healthcare, and support for vulnerable populations.

Amsterdam emphasized the need for prioritizing public funds and ensuring that any benefits for former presidents are balanced against the economic realities faced by citizens. He called for broad public participation in the upcoming protests, urging citizens to advocate for responsible governance and accountability.

“This is not about personalities. It is about protecting the public purse and demanding responsible governance,” Amsterdam stated, highlighting the importance of addressing the needs of the people over extending privileges to former office holders.

He concluded by inviting all Guyanese, regardless of political affiliation or background, to join the peaceful demonstrations, reinforcing the message that the nation’s wealth should be utilized to enhance the quality of life for all citizens.
