During the 60th Independence Anniversary celebrations in Guyana, President Dr. Irfaan Ali delivered a speech at Fort Island, calling for national unity. He expressed concern that political divisions could threaten the country’s economic growth and long-term prosperity. The President’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the executive branch and legislative opposition, characterized by months of parliamentary deadlock and disputes over state revenue management.
Addressing a large crowd at the Diamond Jubilee flag-raising ceremony, President Ali stressed that the country’s economic transformation relies on rejecting partisan and cultural divisions. He stated, “No one should seek to divide Guyana in pursuit of power—government and opposition, private sector and labor, civil society and citizens.” He described the occasion as a pivotal moment for the nation, urging citizens to work together under a unified national framework to enhance investor confidence.
However, the opposition quickly dismissed the President’s appeal for cooperation. Odessa Primus, a Member of Parliament and General Secretary of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, criticized the address as a performance aimed at international observers. She argued that while the government promotes the “One Guyana” doctrine, its actions contradict this message. Primus claimed that the administration fosters division and pointed to instances of economic targeting against female opposition supporters.
Additionally, the political climate has been strained by the management of the 13th Parliament, which had not convened for nearly 100 days prior to a recent announcement. Opposition groups allege that during this period, the executive proceeded with significant financial allocations without parliamentary oversight. They also noted that key bipartisan committees have not been established, and some constitutional commissions were appointed without the required consultations with the Leader of the Opposition.
