Trinidad and Tobago Urges Public to Protect Sea Turtles During Nesting Season

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) has announced the commencement of the annual sea turtle nesting season in Trinidad and Tobago, which runs from March 1 to August 31, 2026. This period is crucial for the preservation of sea turtle habitats, and the ministry is calling on the public to exercise caution to minimize disturbances to nesting sites.

Beachgoers are urged to avoid activities such as biking, driving, or building sand structures on beaches, as these can disrupt nesting behaviors. Additionally, the use of flambeaus, fires, or bright lights along the shoreline should be avoided to prevent disorienting sea turtles, which could lead to the abandonment of nests or hatchling disorientation.

Public cooperation is essential in reducing marine debris, such as plastics and fishing gear, to prevent turtles from becoming entangled. The ministry encourages residents to participate in coastal clean-up efforts to help remove debris and protect marine life. Sitting on turtles is strictly prohibited as it can cause severe harm or even death.

In cases of witnessing harm to turtles, eggs, or hatchlings, individuals are urged to report incidents to the Forestry Division, the Environmental Management Authority, or the Trinidad & Tobago Police Service. This vigilance is necessary to ensure the safety of these protected species.

All five species of marine turtles visiting Trinidad and Tobago, including the Leatherback, Green, Loggerhead, Olive Ridley, and Hawksbill turtles, are protected by law under Legal Notice No.89. The Conservation of Wild Life Act enforces penalties for harm to sea turtles, with fines up to TT$100,000 and potential imprisonment for up to two years.
