Guyana: PM Holness Launches National AI Lab at UTech

Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has emphasized the need for modernization within Jamaica’s labor system to achieve long-term prosperity. Speaking at the 11th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference, he urged Jamaicans worldwide to adopt a culture of productivity, innovation, and digital efficiency. Holness noted that Jamaica has the potential to become a world-class nation, but achieving this requires a significant shift in values and approaches to work.

To support this vision, he announced the establishment of a National Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the University of Technology (UTech). This facility is intended to serve as a model for technical training centers across the country. Holness highlighted the importance of upskilling the workforce to remain competitive in a global economy increasingly influenced by automation and AI.

The Prime Minister advocated for early exposure to AI within the primary education system to prepare Jamaican youth for future challenges in the digital landscape. He believes that this initiative will help cultivate a generation of digital natives capable of navigating the complexities of the global economy.

In related news, Trinidad and Tobago’s Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has criticized the government’s response to recent earthquakes in Venezuela. She described the official diplomatic communication as “insensitive” and called for a more proactive approach to regional relief efforts.

As the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela unfolds, the death toll from the earthquakes has risen significantly, with reports indicating at least 589 fatalities. Emergency workers continue to search for survivors amidst the rubble, while international rescue teams have begun to arrive in the affected areas.

Efforts to provide aid are ongoing, with military teams working to maintain order and distribute essential supplies. However, logistical challenges remain, particularly in suburban and isolated regions, where civilian volunteers are playing a crucial role in rescue operations.
