In a pressing call to action, Jamaican marine scientist Jordon King has voiced concerns over the alarming decline in parrotfish populations due to overfishing. This decline poses significant threats to the health of Jamaica’s coral reefs and broader marine ecosystems.

Parrotfish are vital players in maintaining coral health as they control algae growth, which if left unchecked, can smother corals. “With fewer parrotfish, we’re seeing increased algae growth that competes with corals, making it tougher for them to survive and recover,” King explained.
