GDF Soldier Shot During Patrol Along Guyana’s Western Border
A member of the Guyana Defence Force was injured on Monday after a military patrol came under gunfire while escorting civilian vessels along Guyana’s western border in Region Seven.
According to the GDF, the incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. during a routine patrol operation between Makapa and Eteringbang. Soldiers were providing security for three civilian boats transporting cargo and personnel when they encountered hostile gunfire near an area known as Black Water.
The Defence Force said ranks immediately returned fire while carrying out evasive maneuvers to safely move the civilian convoy out of danger.
During the exchange, one soldier was shot twice in the right leg. The injured serviceman received emergency first aid at the scene before being evacuated for further medical treatment. Authorities said he is being transported to Georgetown for advanced care.
The GDF has not disclosed who carried out the attack or what may have led to the confrontation, but officials stressed that security operations along the western border remain active.
In a statement, the Defence Force said it remains committed to protecting its personnel and safeguarding Guyana’s territorial integrity.
Authorities have not yet announced whether additional security measures will be introduced following the incident, as investigations and patrol operations continue in the area.
