Anthony Bryan, an expert in International Relations, has rejected the statement by US President Donald Trump that the United States would take control of Venezuela following the removal of President Nicolas Maduro by US forces. Bryan argues that while Maduro has been ousted, the power structure in Venezuela remains intact. Vice-President Delcy Rodriguez, according to Bryan, is now the constitutional president of the country. Trump’s comments came after the capture of Maduro and his wife by US forces, and during a news conference, Trump stated that the US would manage Venezuela and its extensive oil reserves. However, he failed to provide specifics on this plan or any potential transitional government. Trump also cast doubt on exiled opposition leader Maria Corina Machado’s ability to lead or be part of an interim government due to lack of internal support.
