International health authorities have traced a hantavirus outbreak linked to a cruise ship to a birdwatching expedition in Patagonia, Argentina, involving Dutch ornithologist Leo Schilperhoard. Officials say Schilperhoard likely contracted the rare Andes strain of hantavirus after visiting a landfill area known to harbor infected rodents shortly before boarding the cruise vessel Envy Hondius.
Investigators believe Schilperhoard and his wife may have inhaled virus contaminated particles from rodent waste while near the landfill, where long tailed pygmy rice rats are commonly found. Unlike most hantavirus strains, the Andes variant has the rare ability to spread from person to person under prolonged close contact conditions.
Schilperhoard reportedly developed symptoms including fever and fatigue on April 6 before dying on April 11 while onboard the vessel. His wife later became critically ill after the ship docked in St. Helena and was evacuated to South Africa, where she also died days after her diagnosis. Health officials say the close quarters aboard the cruise ship, including shared cabins, dining spaces, and enclosed environments, likely contributed to additional infections among passengers.
Authorities have since confirmed several secondary cases linked to the voyage, including another reported death. Global health agencies responded by launching extensive contact tracing operations, quarantine measures, and isolation protocols in an effort to prevent further spread.
Public health experts continue to stress that hantavirus is far less contagious than illnesses such as COVID-19, noting that transmission generally requires prolonged and close exposure. Ongoing awareness campaigns are encouraging travelers and the public to remain cautious in areas where infected rodent populations are known to exist.
