President Irfaan Ali articulated a vision for Guyana’s future that moves beyond merely importing products and selling them in showrooms. During the launch of CAM Motors and the introduction of FOTON and JETOUR vehicles to the local market, he emphasized the importance of transforming Guyana into a center for manufacturing, assembly, and industrial growth.
Ali stated that the country should focus on creating industries that generate value, innovation, and long-term economic opportunities rather than just retail sales. He welcomed the new automotive brands while also challenging the private sector to think bigger. “Our ambition must never be the buying and selling of things,” he remarked. “Our ambition must be to develop an ecosystem around every single business initiative that we pursue.”
He argued that the introduction of new vehicle brands should serve as a foundation for broader industrial development. Ali expressed that the goal is not merely to launch a new brand but to build an ecosystem that supports creativity, innovation, and service delivery.
The President has already encouraged company executives to consider positioning Guyana as an assembly hub for emerging automotive brands. With economic growth accelerating and stronger connections developing with northern Brazil, Ali noted that the conditions are favorable for Guyana to engage in assembly and manufacturing activities that were previously deemed unattainable.
His remarks followed a recent indication of a more stringent approach toward foreign companies seeking access to Guyana’s market, advocating for local production investments. He reiterated that the nation’s future prosperity hinges on creating industries that produce, assemble, and add value locally, stating, “That is what is going to take our country beyond the shores of oil and gas.”
Ali highlighted that government policies related to taxation, energy, and technology incentives are designed to promote industrial expansion and attract investment in productive sectors. He also stressed the significance of partnerships among local businesses, regional investors, and international companies, asserting that such collaborations can create opportunities that extend beyond traditional commerce.
While the introduction of FOTON and JETOUR vehicles reflects a rapidly evolving market and increasing vehicle ownership indicative of rising incomes, Ali clarified that the ultimate goal is to shift Guyana’s identity from a nation known for consumption to one recognized for its production capabilities.
