A Guyanese defense and security expert has raised concerns regarding the recent seizure of AK-47 assault rifles in two separate arms busts, suggesting it may indicate a broader strategy by the Venezuelan government to infiltrate Guyana and potentially seize the Essequibo Region. The expert, who prefers to remain anonymous, emphasized that the Guyana government should be vigilant about the possibility of additional weapons entering the country undetected, especially with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) set to make a ruling on the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award concerning the land boundary with Venezuela.
The expert noted that as the ICJ ruling approaches, Venezuela has already stated it will not recognize the outcome, which could lead to hybrid warfare tactics that fall short of outright invasion. The smuggling of weapons could be part of this strategy, with the possibility that individuals already in Guyana may be waiting for the right moment to create chaos.
Recent incidents, including attacks on Guyana Defence Force (GDF) patrols and bombings of infrastructure, have raised alarms about security in the region. President Irfaan Ali has acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating that an ongoing police investigation is in progress and that international assistance is being sought.
The defense expert cautioned against relying solely on support from the United States, citing the unpredictable nature of international relations. He suggested that the Guyana government should prepare for various scenarios, considering the presence of a significant number of Venezuelan nationals in the country who may have integrated into local communities.
While some may view the expert’s analysis as speculative, he argues that it is essential for Guyana to remain aware of potential threats and to educate the public about security issues, particularly in light of the historical territorial claims made by Venezuela. The expert also referenced insights from U.S. War College Professor Evan Ellis, who suggested that the arms smuggling could be linked to gang activity from neighboring countries, rather than direct government involvement from Venezuela.
