This year’s focus honed in on the resilience and significant contributions of women from the Indian community, shedding light on their pivotal role in shaping the nation’s cultural and social landscape.

From 1845 to 1917, around 147,600 Indian laborers arrived under the indentureship system to work on sugar plantations. Among them, about 42,800 were women who not only endured challenges but also became pillars of their communities. As the celebrations unfolded, tribute was paid to their endurance and the transformative impact they made on Trinidad’s culture.

The day’s events emphasized reflection and appreciation of Indian heritage in the Caribbean, encouraging current and future generations to uphold the traditions and values passed down. Celebrations included cultural displays, traditional Indian music, and dance, offering a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Indian culture that continues to enrich Trinidad and Tobago.

Organizers highlighted the importance of recognizing historical hardships while celebrating the community’s achievements. The message resonated deeply, particularly in communities where Indian heritage plays a central role in daily life.
