A rare and extraordinary event unfolded at Maracas Beach recently when a massive leatherback turtle, under the cloak of darkness, journeyed to the popular shoreline to lay her eggs. This unexpected nesting, occurring in the heart of the beach, swiftly commanded attention. The Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism sprang into action, securing and preserving the site to ensure the safety of the future hatchlings.
Since the occurrence, protective barriers and warning signs have been erected around the nest, clearly marking the area and advising the public not to disturb it. Officials are keenly urging beachgoers to respect the designated zone as the eggs enter their critical incubation period.
Leatherback turtles, recognized as the largest of all sea turtles, are sadly an endangered species. Each nesting event, therefore, carries immense significance for the survival of the species. Trinidad’s shores play a pivotal role in this, serving as a key nesting ground in the Caribbean.
Authorities are encouraging the wider public to remain vigilant and immediately report any disturbances to the nest. They emphasize that protecting our wildlife is a responsibility that we all share.
