Vendors at the historic Femmes du Chalet facility, or the “Breakfast Shed,” in Port of Spain, have been given until April 30 to vacate the location. This has caused concern among business owners and workers who depend on the beloved food hub. The eviction notice was issued by the Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago Limited (UDeCOTT). Financial advisor, Robert Le Hunte, criticised the heavy-handed treatment of small businesses. Le Hunte confirmed that vendors had attempted to engage UDeCOTT in discussions to resolve several issues without success. The Breakfast Shed, a fixture in downtown Port of Spain, supports dozens of small family-run food businesses. Tensions have been building for months over issues of utilities and payments. UDeCOTT’s notice warns that failure to comply could result in legal action and the recovery of the property and outstanding payments, a situation that leaves many vendors uncertain about their future.
