Two Police Officers Charged with Misconduct and Corruption in Unlawful Detainment Case

Two police officers, Stefano Haban and Jalani Prima, have been arrested and formally charged with misconduct and corruption, following an investigation by the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB). The charges are linked to an incident that took place on March 14, 2026, where a motorist was allegedly unlawfully detained and pressured to pay money for his release. The officers are accused of deviating from their intended route to Maloney Police Station, driving along Mausica Road instead.

The motorist was reportedly forced to withdraw $10,000 from an ATM in Arima under the officers’ direction. Additional sums were also allegedly taken from his wallet. The PSB investigation included a controlled operation that led to the arrest of the officers.

In addition to the misconduct and corruption charges, PC Haban faces other charges, including larceny of $1,200 and attempts to corruptly and dishonestly obtain $20,000. Both officers are currently held at the Eastern Correctional Rehabilitation Centre.

The case was heard at the Arima Magistrates’ Court on March 31, 2026, and has been adjourned to April 14, 2026. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service has reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct, emphasizing its commitment to transparency, accountability, and public trust.
