Trinidad and Tobago Nurses Plan Ministry of Health Protest over Unresolved Wage Issues

Healthcare workers across Trinidad and Tobago are gearing up for a significant protest at the Ministry of Health’s head office in Port of Spain this coming Friday, April 10. The demonstration, orchestrated by the Trinidad and Tobago Registered Nurses Association, is a response to ongoing wage and payment disputes. It’s expected to draw a large turnout, potentially reaching into the thousands, including nurses, midwives, and other frontline healthcare personnel.

The key issues driving this action include the alleged withholding of February pool income, reductions in pool rates, and a failure to transition to overtime-based compensation. The association has made it clear that this industrial action is not a one-off event and will persist until these concerns are addressed.

The scope of the protest extends beyond nursing staff, with support expected from a broad range of healthcare workers. This includes attendants, transport staff, laboratory technicians, doctors, and ward assistants. Many of these workers have voiced frustration over their working conditions and compensation.

One of the key demands being put forward is the removal of NCRHA Chairman Tim Goopeesingh. Some workers accuse him of fostering instability within the public healthcare system. As part of the protest, shuttle services have been arranged from key hospital locations to ensure a high turnout.

With the demonstration set to take place at the Ministry of Health’s head office, questions are being raised about how the government will respond to this significant show of discontent. In particular, there is uncertainty over whether the Minister of Health will address the situation publicly, and what actions, if any, will be taken at the administrative level.
