Trinidad and Tobago: Four-vehicle collision results in five injuries in San Fernando

At least five individuals were hospitalized following a four-vehicle collision in Union Hall, San Fernando, on January 9. The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. on the Golconda Connector Road and involved a trailer truck, a three-tonne truck, a Toyota van, and a Nissan Note.

Emergency services, including three ambulances and police from the Southern Division, responded to the scene, along with officers from the Mon Repos Fire Station. The road was subsequently closed to vehicular traffic, prompting drivers to seek alternative routes.

According to initial reports, the drivers of the three-tonne truck, identified as Andy Lalla and lorryman Joseph Vincent, were traveling east when the driver of the Nissan Note, heading in the opposite direction, allegedly veered into their path. Lalla attempted to swerve to avoid a collision, but contact was made between the vehicles.

The trailer truck following behind also swerved to prevent further accidents. The Toyota van, which was behind the Nissan Note, reportedly collided head-on with the trailer truck.

Lalla reported experiencing body pains and was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he and Vincent were treated for their injuries. Vincent expressed gratitude that the situation was not worse, noting the rapid sequence of events.

The driver of the van is reported to be a 61-year-old man. No additional injuries were reported, and police, including PC Ramrattan, are currently investigating the incident.

The collision has raised concerns about road safety in the area, and authorities are urging drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Witnesses at the scene described the moments leading up to the crash, noting that the vehicles were traveling at a significant speed. The investigation will likely focus on the actions of the drivers involved and any potential factors that may have contributed to the collision.

As the investigation continues, local residents have expressed their concerns regarding traffic conditions on the Golconda Connector Road, emphasizing the need for increased safety measures to protect drivers and pedestrians alike.

Emergency services have reiterated the importance of road safety and have encouraged all drivers to exercise caution, especially in areas known for heavy traffic. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers on the road and the importance of remaining alert while driving.

Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation progresses, and updates will be provided to the public regarding any developments related to the case.

In the meantime, the community is coming together to support those affected by the collision, with many expressing their hopes for a swift recovery for the injured individuals.
