Thousands gathered in a significant show of solidarity in Port of Spain to demand accountability and justice. The public outcry follows the police-involved deaths of Joshua and Kaia, sparking chants of ‘Alexander must go.’ The protest was targeted at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, accused of failing to provide sufficient evidence and transparency surrounding the incident.
Signs reading ‘Justice for Kaia,’ ‘Justice for Joshua,’ and ‘We Demand Truth Not Cover Ups’ were held aloft as many questioned the official narrative. The repeated question ‘Where is the gun?’ echoed through the protest, suggesting many doubts about the authorities’ account.
Speakers at the gathering urged citizens not to let division or fear silence their concerns. They warned against the danger of public opinion being ‘pitted against each other,’ instead encouraging trust in personal observation over sole reliance on official statements.
The protest also served to resurrect discussions on past controversial police killings and alleged extrajudicial actions. It demonstrated that long-standing concerns about police accountability in Trinidad and Tobago persist.
A woman, described as a young mother with no prior criminal record, found herself at the center of the controversy. Protesters contended that video footage circulating online has shifted public perception and prompted many to reconsider past police accounts of fatal encounters.
The call for independent investigations, transparency, and justice for families affected by police-related killings resounded through the crowd. Despite the emotional charge, the protest maintained a largely peaceful atmosphere.
