A St. James man is in police custody in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad following a complex investigation into an attempted sale of counterfeit US currency. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service reports the man was detained after he was lured back to the scene of his alleged crime by the victim. The scheme began when the suspect offered to sell US currency at a favourable exchange rate to a local business operator. The victim conducted multiple transactions with the suspect, only to discover later that all the US notes received were counterfeit. The suspect was caught when he returned to the business to sell more counterfeit money. During a search, the police found a small quantity of a substance believed to be cocaine on the suspect. The suspect remains in custody pending further investigations. The police urge the public to be vigilant when engaging in cash transactions and to be wary of exchange rates that seem too good to be true.
