Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has defended Trinidad and Tobago’s decision to join a new regional security partnership with the United States and Guyana. Speaking in Florida, she insisted the arrangement will benefit the wider Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The partnership is said to be part of a strategic effort to strengthen regional security and combat organised crime in the Caribbean. Trinidad and Tobago’s decision to join the America’s Counter-Cartel Coalition, a U.S.-led military and security alliance, has sparked debate about the Caribbean’s relationship with the United States and concerns about sovereignty. However, Persad-Bissessar maintains that this partnership will enhance safety and stability for Trinidad and Tobago and CARICOM states. Officials suggest the agreement could pave the way for deeper cooperation in intelligence sharing, surveillance support and joint operations to dismantle criminal networks operating throughout the Caribbean.
