Persad-Bissessar has sparked controversy with her criticism of Caricom, describing it as an ‘unreliable partner’ and ‘dysfunctional.’ The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, defended Caricom’s approach, stating that it respects individual nations’ rights to conduct bilateral affairs while expecting the same consideration. Browne revealed that T&T has earned more than $1.1 billion from the region. In contrast, Beckles expressed disappointment in Persad-Bissessar’s stance and emphasized Caricom’s support for T&T. Dr Amery Browne, former Minister of Foreign and Caricom Affairs, called Persad-Bissessar’s comments ’embarrassing,’ arguing that she failed to recognize Caricom’s value. He noted that her views are not shared by all T&T citizens.
