The Opposition in Trinidad and Tobago has voiced grave concerns over recent changes affecting nurses’ pay. These changes, they warn, could create further instability in an already strained healthcare system. The crux of the issue lies with the lack of consultation before adjustments were made to extra duty and pool payments, which has caused widespread frustration among healthcare workers.
The Government has labeled these changes as a ‘standardization’ of payments. In contrast, the Opposition, led by Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, counters that nurses are, in reality, receiving less income. This situation is particularly hard on workers who are still grappling with outdated salary structures.
Beckles-Robinson expressed her skepticism towards the Government’s framing of these reductions as alignment and not cuts. She stressed that such policy could risk further demoralizing an already exhausted workforce.
The Opposition is now urging the Health Minister to clearly state the Government’s standing and whether the decision was financially driven. Alongside this, there’s growing concern over possible protest action from nurses. Such a move could adversely impact healthcare delivery, necessitating swift resolution of the matter.
