Norway’s Undersea Tunnel Project, Rogfast, Set to Transform Coastal Travel

Norway’s ambitious undersea tunnel project, Rogfast, promises to redefine coastal travel by replacing multiple ferry crossings with a ferry-free route. The tunnel, named Rogfast (short for ‘Rogaland fixed link’), will be approximately 26.7 kilometers (17 miles) long with the lowest point being 390-392 meters below sea level. The two-lane, dual-tube highway will include a spur to the island municipality of Kvitsøy. Rogfast is part of the larger E39 Highway project meant to significantly reduce travel times between major west coast cities by 2033. The elimination of ferry dependence will result in faster, more reliable transport benefiting commuters, trade, tourism, and regional connectivity. Despite the engineering complexities and cost overruns, the project remains on schedule. Once completed, Rogfast will be the longest and deepest undersea road tunnel globally, serving as a blueprint for other regions facing similar terrain and deep-water fjords.
