Joel Primus, a former candidate for the People’s National Movement (PNM) in the Fyzabad constituency, has reportedly resigned from the party amidst growing internal discord. Primus communicated his resignation in a letter to PNM General Secretary Foster Cummings, expressing his discontent with the party’s current direction.
Primus, a significant figure in the party’s history, cited dissatisfaction with the PNM’s evolution, contrasting it with the vision of its founder, Dr. Eric Williams, and former Prime Minister Patrick Manning. His departure comes at a time of notable upheaval within the party, following the resignation of the San Fernando East constituency executive amid internal disputes.
Primus’ political journey with the PNM is extensive. He challenged the United National Congress (UNC) incumbent in the 2010 General Election and served as a temporary Government Senator. As the former chairman of the PNM’s National Youth League, Primus played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s youth outreach.
His alignment with Patrick Manning was evident when he participated in the 2011 ‘Walk for Democracy,’ advocating for unity within the party. The timing of Primus’ resignation, in conjunction with recent events in San Fernando East, could indicate broader dissatisfaction within the PNM.
Since losing the 2025 General Election, the PNM has faced significant changes, including the resignations of former political leader Dr. Keith Rowley and then-chairman Stuart Young. Whether Primus’ resignation will lead to further departures remains uncertain, as the party navigates its internal challenges and redefines its future direction.
