Nestlé, the multinational food and drink processing conglomerate, has begun a critical review of its operations in Trinidad and Tobago as part of its wider global restructuring initiative. This move brings into question the future of one of the country’s longstanding manufacturing operations where more than 200 employees work. Nestlé’s factory located on the Churchill-Roosevelt Highway in Valsayn is at the heart of this review.
The review is exploring several options for the dairy and juices business, including the potential for a sale. This strategic shift is part of Nestlé’s broader global strategy, which is designed to concentrate on core business areas like nutrition, food, coffee, pet care, and confectionery, while decreasing emphasis on other segments. The food conglomerate is also contemplating the use of third-party distributors in Trinidad and Tobago.
The review process is still in the early stages and no final decisions have been made. Nestlé’s local communications team emphasized the company’s commitment to preserving jobs, protecting local brands, and maintaining operational continuity. Nestlé reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a robust presence in Trinidad and Tobago and throughout the Caribbean.
The Oilfields Workers’ Trade Union (OWTU), representing employees at the facility, is set to meet with workers to discuss the potential implications of the review. This development follows similar restructuring efforts by Nestlé elsewhere in the Caribbean, notably in Jamaica where the company sold its dairy business in 2017.
The review comes as Nestlé continues to implement changes in response to slowing growth, escalating costs, and shifting consumer demands in international markets. The Trinidad and Tobago Government, led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, is closely monitoring the situation, underlining the potential implications for the local agricultural sector and the wider economy.
