Hyderabad Chamber Terms Autobhan Road Expansion Incomplete Without Safety Measures

The Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry (HCSTSI) has declared the Sindh government’s Autobhan Road expansion project incomplete, citing a critical lack of safety measures that has turned the route into a daily hazard.

Chamber president Muhammad Saleem Memon, in a letter to Chief Secretary Sindh Syed Asif Haider Shah, said that while the road’s construction and expansion have improved traffic flow and city infrastructure, the real success of the project will only be achieved when the highway is made completely safe. He described the frequent accidents on Autobhan Road as worrisome, resulting in loss of precious lives and property damage.

Memon noted that the chamber had submitted several safety suggestions to the government last year, but most remain unimplemented. He demanded immediate installation of safety grilles in the middle of the road to prevent illegal crossings, construction of additional foot over bridges for pedestrians, deployment of modern traffic surveillance cameras, and formation of a special traffic police unit for round-the-clock patrolling.

Other demands include strict action against one-way violations, wrong-way driving, illegal parking, encroachments, and speeding. The chamber also called for clear road markings, reflective sign boards, zebra crossings, proper street lights, and other modern safety arrangements to significantly reduce the accident rate.

“Autobhan Road is an important commercial artery of Hyderabad where thousands of vehicles, motorcycles, students, employees, traders, and citizens commute daily,” Memon said. He warned that without timely safety measures, there is a risk of further loss of precious lives, and urged the chief secretary to issue immediate instructions to concerned departments for priority implementation of a comprehensive traffic management and road safety plan.
