The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries announced that an offshore oil spill, first detected in the Main Field on May 1, 2026, was swiftly contained and managed by Heritage Petroleum Company Limited. The company activated its emergency spill response protocols immediately upon detection, and all relevant authorities were promptly notified. Authorities revealed that trajectory models suggested the hydrocarbon material could have potentially infringed upon the maritime border between Trinidad and Venezuela in the Gulf of Paria, if not addressed promptly. Chemical dispersants were approved and deployed in response to this threat. Visual inspections confirmed the efficacy of these dispersants in breaking up the hydrocarbons. Further inspections, involving drones and vessels, found no visible traces of the spill remaining on the water’s surface. The source of the leak was promptly identified, halted on May 1, repaired, and returned to operational status by May 2. The spill was estimated to consist of approximately ten barrels of oil. Officials continue to conduct daily offshore inspections and have reported no additional spill incidents since the initial event. The Ministry has stated its commitment to ongoing collaboration with both local and international authorities to further strengthen response measures for future incidents along the shared maritime border.
