Guyana: Three Cows Die During Transport, Majority of Others Reported Healthy

Three pregnant Brazilian heifers that were part of a program aimed at increasing beef and milk production in Guyana died during their transport to the Ebini research station, located in East Bank Berbice. This information was confirmed by Dwight Walrond, Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), who stated that the last report indicated three mortalities, countering claims from the opposition We Invest in Nation (WIN) party that 15 animals had perished.

Walrond noted that the mortality rate is within acceptable limits for cattle transported over long distances, specifically over 1,000 kilometers from Roraima State to Ebini. He expressed confidence that the remaining animals, which were observed to be cramping, would survive, although one was in severe distress and may need to be euthanized if its condition does not improve.

Those that did not survive will be replaced by the supplier at a cost of GY$245,000 each. In total, Guyana has procured 1,000 pregnant heifers. Walrond reported that the overall prognosis for the remaining animals is positive, as they are reportedly active, feeding, and hydrating well.

Walrond acknowledged that the GLDA did not adequately consider tidal flow during the transport process, which contributed to delays. He mentioned that the Ministry of Agriculture anticipates that each calf will produce one calf per year, with non-optimal producers being separated to enhance the national cattle population.

The tropical breeds chosen for this program are known for their resilience in varying weather conditions and resistance to ticks and tick-borne diseases. In response to concerns about the condition of some cows, Walrond explained that they were quarantined in Brazil for a week and transported with limited forage to prevent digestive issues.

He emphasized that the transport conditions were standard for such long distances and that the animals would improve in appearance shortly. Additionally, he clarified that the cattle were not intended to pass through the Linden-Soesdyke Highway, as the transport route was clearly defined.
