A prime suspect has been arrested following a robbery incident involving a food vendor in Georgetown, Guyana. According to the Guyana Police Force, the suspect was apprehended after allegedly robbing the vendor of a gold chain valued at GY$200,000.
The incident occurred around 11:50 a.m. on Sunday at the vendor’s food stand located on Bent Street. The vendor reported that two males arrived on a black Honda XR motorcycle. The pillion rider, armed with a firearm, dismounted and approached the vendor, demanding his belongings.
During the encounter, the vendor handed over a yellow metal chain worth GY$200,000. Following this, a scuffle ensued between the vendor and the armed suspect. During the altercation, the suspect reportedly discharged two rounds from his firearm, which subsequently fell to the ground.
Members of the public intervened to assist the vendor, leading to the apprehension of one suspect. The second suspect managed to escape on the motorcycle, heading east along Bent Street. The suspect who was captured sustained injuries during the incident and was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for medical attention, where he is currently under police guard.
In addition to the suspect, police recovered a Smith & Wesson .40 pistol, along with three live rounds of ammunition found in a magazine that was dropped during the scuffle. A spent shell was also collected from the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, and CCTV footage from the area will be reviewed as part of the inquiry. Authorities are actively searching for the second suspect involved in the robbery.
