Concerns were raised by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed regarding a potential “rupture” of the US$1 billion natural gas pipeline off the coast of Georgetown. In response, the Guyana government stated that further inspections of a “small anomaly” were in progress, emphasizing that there was no leak since no gas is currently passing through the pipeline.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Maritime Administration (MARAD) confirmed receiving a report about the pipeline and noted that an investigation revealed an irregularity in the 12-inch diameter pipeline. However, the agencies did not disclose the specifics of the anomaly or the results of the investigation.
Queries directed to EPA Head Khemraj Parsram, as well as representatives from MARAD, EPA, and Exxon Mobil Guyana, regarding the nature of the anomaly and whether any remedial actions were being taken, went unanswered. Despite the lack of information, the EPA and MARAD assured the public that they would continue to provide accurate updates and urged residents to verify facts through official channels to avoid unnecessary alarm.
Further inspections are being conducted to ensure the pipeline’s safety. According to the agencies, the anomaly was thoroughly investigated, and additional inspections are being carried out as a precautionary measure to confirm the pipeline’s integrity, in line with standard safety protocols.
MARAD and EPA refuted claims made by Mr. Mohamed regarding a rupture in the 140-mile pipeline, stating that there is no factual basis for these assertions. They reiterated that the pipeline is not currently active and that no gas is flowing through it, which means there cannot be a leak or damage as suggested.
Mr. Mohamed referenced images and videos showing bubbling in the Atlantic Ocean near the MT Telesto, a utility vessel anchored approximately two miles off Georgetown. Since May 2026, ExxonMobil Guyana has been conducting a scheduled inspection of the subsea pipeline, a process expected to last around three months, involving five vessels operating along the West Coast of Demerara. The public had been informed in advance of this inspection program through a notice issued by MARAD.
